Chapter 24: Fear
“He’s lying,” Beverly spat.
Janet peered at the dead woman. Is her face paler?
“Either that,” Beverly continued, “or you misheard him.”
“I didn’t mishear anything,” Janet countered. Definitely paler. Hell, I think she’s afraid. How can a dead woman as powerful as Beverly be afraid of anything?
Beverly whirled around and stalked toward the end of the living room. She passed through the wall, and something was thrown in the kitchen. The ghost reappeared a moment later, her face a seething mass of fear and hatred.
“Where is he?” Beverly demanded.
“I put him away.” Janet sat down and stared at the dead woman. “What the hell has you so worked up?”
Beverly whirled on her, opened her mouth, then narrowed her eyes. “You really don’t know.”
“Exactly,” Janet said in exasperation. “I really don’t know. There was a clue, you know. It was, ‘what the hell has you so worked up?’”
Beverly eyed Janet as if she was deciding how much she should and shouldn’t share.
“There is a man,” the ghost admitted, “who is not what you would consider helpful. He is like you in the fact that he can see the dead. However, he is not like you in the sense that he has a moral center if you will. He has a very real sense of what is right and what is wrong. You and I both, my dear, fall under the ‘what is wrong’ category.”
“Have you met him before?” Janet asked.
The dead woman scoffed. “Of course, I haven’t met him! We would not be having this conversation if I had. As powerful as I am, Janet, I doubt even I could have survived a confrontation with him. He does not care for ghosts such as myself, or those whom we choose to work for us.”
“Okay.” Janet shook her head. “Tell me, how do you know so much about him?”
“Word travels,” Beverly informed her with a smile. “Even among the dead, word travels. We talk about those who can see us. Those we can possess when the time is needed. And, more importantly, those who hunt us.”
Janet couldn’t help laughing at the ridiculous image that conjured in her mind. “Hunt? Like those ridiculous shows with people running around, armed with cameras and recorders?”
“No.” Beverly shook her head. “Nothing like those shows you watch on occasion. They hunt down the objects we inhabit. Then, they catch us and put us away or destroy us.”
“So, who is this guy?”
“I don’t know his name,” Beverly answered. “I have only a description of him, and the reliable information that he is a man we would do well to avoid. I am thinking we should sacrifice Henry, leave him in a place where this man might find him again.”
“Don’t you think Henry would kill him?” Janet asked, still not quite believing what Beverly was telling her. “He was caught unprepared before. He wouldn’t be a second time. Then what do we do about a scenario like that? Chuck’s already killed one person here, and I have the suspicion there’ll be more.
